NexCen Sells Bill Blass for $10 Million

NexCen wanted to unload Bill Blass from its books months ago but only just now made the sale. And like every pair of Manolos in this town, they had to mark it waaaaay down to get it out the door. Though NexCen sought $25 million for the designer business in September, they sold it for a mere $10 million. The lucky buyer is Peacock International Holdings LLC, a men's dress shirt and neckwear company. We know — random.

NexCen shut down the Bill Blass ready-to-wear line on December 19, laying off 60 employees with no severance. So now that the label's in Peacock's nest, can the line spread its wings and soar once more? Eh, don't get your hopes up. At least, not anytime soon. Since Peter Som left as head designer of the Bill Blass line two months ago, reportedly over frustrations that NexCen didn't know how to run a designer brand, and NexCen couldn't financially support a spring 2009 runway show, it's going to be hard to revive the brand to its former ready-to-wear glory. No head womenswear designer (it should be noted Michael Bastian remains creative designer for menswear) and no runway presence do not a booming label make, and few expect it to become so.

Meanwhile, NexCen plans to use the cash to pay off some of its debts, like that incurred by the Blass brand and, perhaps, its purchase of the Great American Cookie company. Yeah, the company that wants to focus on selling cookies and growing ice-cream franchises was evidently not the best choice to run a designer fashion label. Stereotypes don't exist for nothing.

Christina Aguilera to Do Topshop Line?

We've seen rumors about this in the British tabs before, but it's back, so here goes: Topshop owner Sir Philip Green is reportedly wooing Christina Aguilera to design a collection for his chain. The enormous success of Mirror, “Philip loves her style and believes she would add something new to TopShop. Christina is the blonde bombshell who is into pop whereas Kate is the rock chick and model." Thanks for clearing up their occupations, anonymous source. On that note, we've been thankful that Christina has avoided designing things people can wear for some time. If we do say, she seems to be in the midst of a fashion/image crisis right now. The Studio 54 jumpsuits and Hot Topic lingerie she wears onstage, the permanently bold lip color, the thick black eyeliner she probably tattooed on in secret — it's like she landed at a Madonna concert from Planet Moulin Rouge and thought that was how we do things on Earth. Well,Moulin Rouge came out at the end of the VHS era for goodness sake. Upgrade yourself, honey!

This week we’re rating the beautiful Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl fame (Blair Warldorf), who I personally adore. I nearly always love her style, whether on or off the screen. The oversized boyfriend blazer is right on trend for this season; as are the shoe-boots (if you can call them that - they’re somewhere in between, right?). The Kate Moss for Topshop Christmas collection is launching soon: Tuesday 28th October. I haven’t been that impressed with this collaboration so far, so i’m hoping the Autumn/Winter 08 offering will be more exciting. Kate has been on a promotional treadmill this week with press interviews. I liked some of her style tips so I wanted to share them with you! Here goes…

Never look like you’ve tried too hard - or rather don’t try too hard! Mismatching can add a much more personal touch to an outfit.

Be brave and try new hair styles! It can completely transform your look just for one night and inspire a new way of looking at your existing wardrobe.

Mix old with new - the options are endless and it’s good to make your own vision. Recently for a friend’s wedding I paired a beautiful Chanel maxi dress with an antique blue velvet cape and a pair of huge Turkish hoop earrings which gave the dress a totally unique feel.

Don’t take a vintage or second-hand piece on face value as it can be altered in so many ways. I’ve lopped the hem of many full length gowns and made necklines lower. It does help to have a genius dress maker, otherwise just do it yourself!

When going out for the evening, think about your arrival - the accidental pairing of a battered leather jacket and floor sweeping gown looks amazing and effortless, as does an embroidered jacket paired with your old jeans.

I wholeheartedly agree with point 5 - to me, nothing looks cooler right now than a fitted leather jacket thrown over a fancy dress. I love the contradiction. Just a couple of weeks ago I wrote about the edge it adds to an otherwise feminine outfit.

I love, love, love the little black lace minidress…the shape, the length, the fabric, the too cool for school pockets! Ahhh…fashion at it’s best. The shoes are by Christian Louboutin (for Rodarte), of course, and are priced at a jaw-dropping £1,500. They give a new meaning to the phrase ‘killer heels’. At least nobody will be stepping on her toes in a hurry.

We Had No Idea That This Was the Way to Go

We would like to think that we were developmentally beyond the part where we put the tube of toothpaste into our tote bags, thinking, Oh, no, that'll totally not end up being a really, really bad idea. Like, come on. Honestly. We spent half the day licking all of our stuff, because tap water was too uncontrollable and tissues got too sticky. Argh.

Anyway, we're in the market for a new tote bag, and we're thinking we'll be able to deal with this in Vietnam, which is where we are now. This city is fucking crazy! They literally have these helpful guards to walk you across the street since there is apparently not so much of a functioning pedestrian crossing system going on.

That's tomorrow. In the meantime: We were telling our best friend that these Japanese girls—and she was all, "How did you know they were Japanese? Couldn't they have been Korean? Or Chinese?" And we were like, "Because they were holding their passports! Snap!" We did not say "snap," but we certainly did think it. Anyway, we saw three passport-holding Japanese girls at our hotel yesterday, each carrying an LL Bean bag. We had no idea. This is, in any case, a super-cute bag for not much money, even if we would without a doubt find some way to destroy it with a beauty or health product. LL Bean regimental stripe bag, $22

We love love love reader mail. While your regularly scheduled writer is presumably laying on some tropical island, dodging monkeys, we are not traveling, not in a tropical area, and working under hideous lighting for far too many hours a day.

For bridal showers, we have a default gift. We've sent it to our best friend (yes, we skipped her shower), we've sent it to fiancees of friends, we've sent it to our Loved One's relatives we couldn't pick out of a crowd. We've always gotten really great feedback, so we'll keep giving it until someone tells us to stop. Or, all of our friends are married. Either way.

Personally, we don't love Philosophy products - we find them drying. But we think they smell great, have excellent packaging, are vague enough to be appropriate for everyone without being impersonal and they always present well.

They are a wardrobe essential, except in the sense that we do not, at the moment, have one, having lost our last one at a bar in Siberia after quietly, politely puking vodka into a shack bathroom. Ooh, way too much specificity for a Tuesday morning after a holiday, no? Anyway: above is the sort of hoodie we like: rather plain. We are always so confused this time of year: Do we buy sale things? Or do we buy new things?
Er, so this is not exactly Sophie's choice, etc., but it does press on our apparently rabbit-sized brain, pun notwithstanding. We were thinking, then, that we'd talk about three things that are on sale, and three new things. Inevitably we are drawn to the bright and shiny. We are hoping we stay strong.

So obviously we write this hoping that no one is reading this, because everyone is at the mall or the park or the tropical island having a wonderful vacation. We are sprucing the shit up around here, if you will forgive the entirely unnecessary profanity, and we introduce: our search box! We just searched for "James Blunt" and we found all this stuff we wrote when we actually thought he was cute. (This is unlikely to recur in 2008. Can we say that our brain is so fried that we just had to look up "recur" to make sure it's a word.)

Anyhoo, we'll be back stronger than ever in 2008 (er, if we do say so ourselves) and we'll be doing some behind the scenes work for the next few days. As always we love to know what is up with everyone and we pray and expect everyone is having a super-fun time.

Katie Holmes and Suri Wrap Up Christmas Shopping

With only days until Christmas, Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri were spotted grabbing a few last-minute gifts at Maxfield’s and Fred Segal yesterday.

Clutching a stuffed-animal pony, Suri looked excited to be out and about amongst the holiday hustle and bustle. And the “Dawson’s Creek” actress looked like a seasoned pro when it came to plunking down the big bucks.

As a matter of fact, there are reports that Mrs. Tom Cruise spent $100,000 on gifts this holiday season. And an estimated $70,000 of that was on the “Valkyrie” actor alone.

Some of the items Santa will be bringing Tom are; a $30,000 rose-gold Cartier wristwatch, a black Giorgio Armani suit, Gucci snakeskin sneakers and a Prada ski coat.

Even Suri will be receiving an estimated $5,000 worth of baby clothes. And Holmes’ friends? They were treated to a $300 lunch at Nieman Marcus in Beverly Hills.
Sounds like we know who to make friends with in 2008!

Last Minute Shopping Tips

Christmas is almost here, and our shopping is ALMOST done. We are still trying to find adequate gifts for some family members - as the time to find the perfect gift has passed. Actually, we DID have the perfect gift in mind for one family member, but we weren't sold on it. We were told last night that actually, it WOULD HAVE been perfect - except now we can't have it shipped in time. Grr. So, with that, we will try to bring you some of our shopping tips.

*If you still need a random gift and you want to buy it online, some of the larger sites will still guarantee shipping. We've had good luck with LL Bean (gotta order by noon EST today, though), Overstock (same shipping requirement, though), and even QVC (though there is an additional charge). We have to say, we have some insiders at QVC and we know they bust their butts to give amazing customer service. And what can be had at QVC? Let's just say they have excellent prices on things for older generations - some of whom we KNOW read this site, hence the vagueness.

*Embrace shopping online with store pickup. This seems to be most prevalent at electronics stores, and grocery stores, for some reason. Since you're not likely to give a box of pasta for Christmas, places like Best Buy and Circuit City make the store experience a lot more pleasant.

*Also, e-gift certificates! Sephora offers e-gift certificates that are sent via email and redeemed online. We would just like to say we see absolutely nothing wrong with gift cards for presents, but if you buy one that HAS to be redeemed online, cough up an extra $5 to cover shipping when the recipient places their order. It just seems fair.

*When in doubt, a raincheck is semi-appropriate. This is appropriate with two catches - one, you HAVE to make good on it (we are still waiting for several presents from one particular family member), and two, it has to be worth the wait. If you are torn between giving someone a gift card for Barnes and Noble, or a really, really awesome handmade thing you saw on Etsy, give them the better gift. But make sure you explain the raincheck. Don't just be like, oh sorry, you have to wait!

*Make sure the person can use what you give them. We have been given Christmas ornaments every year for about 3 years, despite the giver knowing we do not, nor will we, have a Christmas tree. If you get someone the universal gift (aka an iTunes gift card), make sure they have iTunes. Or drink coffee, or eat packaged meats.

*If you do go out to the stores in person, remember: it's not worth getting mad about it We have to tell our Loved One all the time that it's not worth fussing over a parking spot, or someone taking a while at the register, or waiting for the restroom. Maybe we are just particularly low-key, but none of that junk is worth getting in a tizzy about. Chalk it up to experience.

Crying and Shopping Don't Always Mix

So, we suffered a loss this weekend when our 20 year old cat, Boomer, passed away. We had the misfortune of finding out as we were standing in the housewares section of our local Anthropolgie. We were shopping with our Lovely Friend who, bless his heart, just stood there and patted our shoulder as we tried really hard not to cry on the upholstery. It was not easy. And we tend to freak out a little bit when we get bad news, so instead of freaking out, we did the other thing we do best. We went shopping. Here's what we bought:

Above, the Going Green t-shirt from Forever 21. Our Loved One picked this out as he's really eco-friendly and all about promoting the environment. He'd use CFLs in every light if we let him (which we generally do). We like the fit and shape of this shirt. The quality is what you'd expect - you can see right through it, so layering is key. We plan to match it with a tank underneath and a v-neck sweater over top.

Going Green t-shirt, $13.80

So. Jeans. We hate shopping for jeans because few things make us feel worse about life. So combine a minor tragedy AND jean shopping? Crazy, right? Well. These jeans are $12.50, and that in itself makes them worth trying on. We actually really like the fit. They're skinny, slightly stretchy, and the waistband isn't scandalously low. The only problem? The quality control is completely lacking. We bought 2 pair of the exact same ones and there was about a 2" difference in them. So, try before you buy. But we really like them.

This weird looking wedge of pink stuff is actually face soap called Fresh Farmacy. It's supposed to calm red, blotchy, unhappy skin - which ours certainly was, with the crying and the cold and the snot. Really, we are not attractive when we cry. We haven't tried this soap just yet, but we're excited to.

This we have been using, and we really like it. We've always been moisturizer-deficient. Every one containing SPF has made us breakout, and all the others are just gross. We had one we loved, but then it got discontinued, and we've been on a search ever since. We noticed on the Lush.com messageboards that in the UK, Ultralight has a documented SPF of about 14. One customer wrote to Lush and asked if it was the same for the US version, and it is! We're not sure why it's not mentioned, but we know that SPF is key to not getting wrinkly or skin cancer, and we need all the protection we can get from the sun and wind and dirt. Apparently this is meant for dry skin, but we've not had any problems. So far, so good!

We didn't exactly stop shopping there; we also purchased 6 latte bowls from Anthropologie, a long-sleeve men's shirt from Urban Outfitters that we wore all weekend, running shorts and leggings from American Apparel, and, er, approximately 8 shirts of the tee and tank variety from American Apparel. Now, we know, and we totally hear this. Of course most of the things we use every day are well under this budget as well. Our whole philosophy here is that no one really needs to chat about things that are not super expensive, because they're, you know, not super expensive—risk is mitigated, and everyone probably has their favorites already. What we always found was that we really wanted to chat about things that were super expensive, just because we didn't want to fuck it up. We don't want anybody thinking we're trust funders. Trust us, and our landlord, who is remarkably patient about always getting out rent a month late. We're not.

So all that aside, our picks.

We swear we have bought this conditioner on every continent on earth. We will say though that we absolutely just go through it, and we're convinced that our Kiehl's works out to be cheaper and is also a better conditioner. Pantene conditioner (24 oz.), $7.19

We feel that sometimes a product will have a crap design, and then you're like, oh! Ugly, but cheap, and possibly effective! That is how we feel about this. Green Canyon Spa exfoliator, $7.69

For the extremely dry things, like heels or elbows or whathaveyou. The whole cow thing freaks us out a bit, but okay. Bag Balm, $6.89

his Week at Primark

Any of you taken a trip to Primark recently? I stopped by the Manchester branch yesterday where TK Maxx has been kicked out of the basement to make vast amounts more space for Womenswear. Womenswear now occupies the entire ground floor plus you'll still find underwear and sleepwear upstairs. Primark has followed Topshop (or vice-versa) in making Knitwear it's primary concern this season with both stores stocking extensive ranges.

This grey tie waist wrap sweater [£10 - expensive by Primark standards] was all out of most sizes, with ladies swarming round the rail fighting over the last few. It's just about the cosiest sweater i've tried on this year. The material seemed good and there's plenty of it - a longer length sweater cut generously, allowing you to layer underneath - would look cute with a fitted white or coloured tee. The blue cosy neck sweater [£6] doesn't look much on the hanger but exceeded expectations when I tried it on. I really liked the subtle puff detail on the shoulders and the neck is perfect.
Another popular option was this green cable cardigan which demanded lots of attention located on a wall display for everyone to see. I had to wait my turn to search out my size. The colour hasn't really come out on the photograph but it's really something!

If you want shoes then Primark has LOTS! Seriously, they've expanded their footwear range in a big way - one of the best places on the high street to buy flats (whatever colour you're after you'll find it here). Some black platform mary janes caught my eye but I still don't know how I feel about synthetic shoes, regardless of the amazing price tag [£12]. They were very comfy to try on and look a lot better in real life than they look in these photographs. Do any of you have any experience of wearing faux-leather shoes?

We've had two haircuts by her in the last couple months, and we've never felt better. We recently decided to pay for a nice gym. At this nice gym, we have cardio machines with their own LCD/tv screens, complete with headphone jack so we don't have to hear the ESPN newscast all around us. There's something to be said for working out to 'The Simpsons'. This new, fancy gym also has a lovely, large locker room - and, most importantly, a full schedule of spinning classes. We are new to spinning, though not new to riding our bike. But while we can keep up a decent pace on our bike, we were not, in any way, prepared for spinning. We, generally, do not sweat a whole lot. We can usually rinse off quickly and be on our way. After spinning, we were positively dripping. It was rather filthy.

But, we felt great and we are really excited to go back (especially after eating a rather insane amount of stuffing this weekend). However, this time we are prepared. We are absolutely wearing our cycling shorts. We are, without a doubt, bringing a hand towel with us to wipe sweat off us and the bike - we even purchased two towels just for this. And we are absolutely bringing our newest purchase, the Bliss Sinkside Six Pack, with us. Sure, we could've gone to Target and picked up random, travel size things and tossed them into our gym bag. But that wouldn't have been nearly as much fun. And it wouldn't be even close to a treat. We know working out is good for us, but honestly, getting sweaty at 6am is a lot easier to stomach when we have something to look forward to afterwards.

Plus, we've found that the lemon-sage products from Bliss smell exactly like Lemon Pledge, and that is probably our favorite smell of all time. It's actually a pretty good deal, and it'd make a great gift for that random present you always end up having to give. And, it's a really nice way to end a rather grueling hour. We love Bliss, but can rarely justify the cost. This little six pack is like the samples you get from Starbucks - it's enough to do the trick, and let you make an educated decision about buying the real deal.

So we have coveted this sleep mask since the first time we saw Breakfast at Tiffany's, but we could never find precisely the right thing. Then we saw these on Fred Flare, aptly labeled the Holly Golightly sleep mask. But we were all, "What's up with the fake eyelashes and gold trim?"

So then we were wondering how PhotoShopped the Audrey picture was, and checked our earlier commentary (with the photo above). We were wrong, obvs. This reminds us of that part in American Pastoral where the Swede finds out his wife always hated the house they live in ... only a bit less melodramatic. In any case: We might still need to get out the glue gun, as those lashes look a bit thick to us. No?

Let it Snow? Really?

As we write this, it's snowing. We, in fact, had a whole other post started but when it started to snow, we realized that staying warm in crap weather is more important to us than most other things.

We hate being cold. We are cold all the time. We are cold in the winter, cold in the air conditioned summers. We generally wear some kind of cardigan - be it of the sweater or sweatshirt variety - on any given day. At our desk, we keep a bright blue wool sweater that we wear over everything, including other sweaters. We do not discriminate. We have found the only way we can be warm is a combination of sweat pants, a sweat shirt, a tank top and/or t-shirt, a down (or equally heavy) blanket covering us from the ribs down, and a large, warm dog sleeping on our feet. This is exactly how we are right now. Since that's not so conducive to doing things like, oh, leaving the house, here are our cold weather picks:

Our first choice is this jacket from North Face. We never really bought into the hype of North Face, it was always just kind of like the puffiest of puffy coats. But we recently bought the Gotham Jacket and we love it. It's warm as can be, it's got zip pockets (even an internal one which is the best thing ever), and the hood comes down far enough to shield your face when it's snowing and raining and nature is basically spitting on your face. It's pricey, but we don't know anyone who has a North Face coat who doesn't love it.

Our mom always said that we should wear a hat because all the heat escapes that way. We didn't believe her, until we moved to city and started walking. And then we had winter without heat (because of our deadbeat landlord, not because we didn't pay the bill). Hats, especially those lined with something, are where it's at. We can't tell if we feel completely ridiculous or secretly cool in a bomber hat, but we don't care. There are tons of styles out there, but we like this one because the fur isn't real. We feel we should pause for a moment to note two things; we are unsure if the North Face jacket has fake or real fur. We were told it was fake at the time of non-refundable purchase. And second, we are not implying that anyone should buy fake fur because we prefer it - everyone is entitled to their opinion. There are things we do our best not to do - like eat hot dogs - but that doesn't mean we won't come to the barbecue and eat all your potato salad. Anyway. We love hats lined with fuzzy materials, and we like that this one isn't over the top.

I was intrigued by the red bracelet i'd seen on Lauren Conrad's wrist in just about every single photograph of her. When I found out the supposed meaning (to bring good luck, protect yourself from harm, and ward off evil) I figured after the month i've had I need to get myself one of these. I've heard they're very hardwearing (can handle your daily shower with you no problem) so I don't plan on taking mine off. It's very cool...when i'm wearing it I don't even notice it's there because the silk is so soft. LOVE it! Lauren has said of the bracelet "This was a gift from friends when I was having a hard time. We Celebrate the Sweater Coat

Sweater coats! Longer, and more coat-like, than cardigans. Not to be used in lieu of actual coats. We've done that, and rued the choice, more than once. In fact, we did that just tonight, with our Havaianas, and looked like big, roly-poly, sweater coat morons.

Browsing Aldo Online I came across this white metal watch currently on sale for £24.95 (FREE shipping too!). It reminds me a lot of the highly coveted Chanel J12 watch which retails for more than 100 times the price of this Aldo find. The photo of the Aldo watch isn't so clear but I imagine in real life the band is just as chunky and bright white looking as the J12. The two row diamond (ok, cubic zirconia) rim gives a very similar effect to the J12, especially from afar. It's a shame the Aldo version doesn't have the sharp black numbering to the face which I love about the J12 - this really is my dream watch. Dream being the operative word...only in my dreams would I ever own this.

Hilary Duff Keeps Her Clothes ON For FHM

he most recent issue of UK mens' magazine FHM has just hit the shelves, with Hilary Duff as this month's cover girl. Yes the shoot is sexy but it is definitely not what I'd expect from a magazine which usually displays topless shots. I wonder if FHM readers felt a little cheated to open the magazine and find Hilary very much fully clothed? The shots are tasteful, demure and wouldn't look out of place in ladies fashion mags such as Glamour or Instyle. The mini cropped leather biker jacket is right on trend and is a look that appears in the Kate Moss for Topshop collection. Good for you Hilary for not selling out and getting your kit off for money. What a great role model for young girls - this is one celebrity you won't see falling over drunk or photographed minus underwear.

Kate Winslet: Yay or Nay?

Kate Winslet attended the 16th Annual Bafta/LA Cunard Britannia Awards (now, that was a mouthful) a couple of days ago in Hollywood wearing a controversial dress.

This obviously wasn't a 'safe' choice. When presented with photographs like this I sometimes wonder what the intention behind the outfit was. Do celebrities wear off-the-wall outfits purely to cause controversy and ultimately column inches or are they simply exploring their own style and pushing the boundaries?

I'm not sure the metallic finish and texture of the gown sits well with the classic (almost frumpy) shape. I love the super-wide black patent belt (a must-have for your wardrobe) but not with this dress. The belt is too 'now' to be teamed with a shape of dress that is 'not now'. It's a bit like eating ketchup with ice cream...they just don't go well together.

Necessary Things

Generally speaking, we should be kept in a bubble.We have mentioned before how insanely clumsy we are. We fall down standing still, we'll tip over at random. We will completely drop everything in our hands for no apparent reason at all. Earlier this week, even, we almost choked on toothpaste AND fell off the treadmill in two separate events! Most things we own should also be bubblefied, or at least siliconed or bumpered SOMEHOW, as they will inevitably go careening towards the floor at some point in time.

Today was no exception. We had an eye doctor appointment this morning (all went well), so we got to work late. Which means we missed day 3 of our running schedule. And today is Friday, and we leave work early on Fridays. At 4:00pm. So we could've run after work, but during lunch was preferable. What's the point of leaving early if you suck up that time on the treadmill? And hey, it was only 20 minutes. So, come lunchtime, we gather up our clothes and toddle downstairs to the gym. We go in, look around quick to make sure a treadmill is available, and we go to the locker room to get changed.

We emerge, 5 minutes, 3 shirt changes, and a couple discouraged looks in the mirror later. WE ARE READY TO RUN. We have our sneakers, our iPod, our ponytail. We are on the the treadmill. We're moving. Oh, what's that we see? Is that our Exec. VP who is so fit it's questionable if he's actually human? It IS! It IS!

ExecVP looks at us and smiles in a friendly way. He really is a lovely man.
'Hi ExecVP!', we say and wave. And by wave, we mean raise our arm, get our hand stuck in our headphone cord, and manage to ROCKET our iPod across the room.

We stopped the treadmill, got off, retrieved our iPod and just looked straight ahead for the rest of our run.

Thankfully we have a nice hardcase on our iPod so it doesn't get all jacked when we are clumsy. It's still good as new, believe it or not.

And, we have learned our lesson. No more running at lunchtime.

Moschino Cheap and Chic made The Giraffe their fashion inspiration for Spring 2007. There were giraffe print tops and shoes and leggings and giraffe brooches and giraffe dresses. It's really cute and refreshing and the humour kept it from being an overkill.

This is a fashion nightmare, but the giraffe is so adorable, it makes me smile.

Lane Garrison 40 Months in Prison

Lane Garrison was sentenced to three years and four months in prison Wednesday for a drunken driving crash that killed a 17-year-old Beverly Hills High student last December.

“The public has the right to know that conduct such as this, causing devastation such as this” will have consequences, said Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox.

“Unfortunately, in this case, you have to be the messenger,” he told the former “Prison Break” actor.

Garrison, 27 could have received nearly seven years in prison. He had no reaction to the sentencing and was taken away in handcuffs. Before the sentencing, he apologized to the family of Vahagn Setian.

“I’m sick of my own behavior that night,” he said. “This remorse is genuine. I feel it every day.”
About 30 teenagers, many of them Beverly Hills High students, packed the courtroom, some wearing T-shirts that had Setian’s photograph and the motto: “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”

“There are no winners in this situation, obviously,” Setian family spokesman James Lee said outside court. After the hearing, defense attorney Harland Braun said his client “was hopeful (of leniency) but someone’s dead and he’s alive." Braun said Garrison told him: “I’m the lucky one.” Setian was a passenger in the 2001 Land Rover that Garrison rammed into a tree on Dec. 2. Two 15-year-old girls who also were in the vehicle survived. Garrison met the teens at a grocery store and accompanied them to a party. At the time of the crash, Garrison had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit for driving, and was under the influence of cocaine, according to police.

Garrison pleaded guilty in May to one count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, one count of driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 percent or higher and a misdemeanor of providing alcohol to a minor. Classmates and relatives of Setian had pressed for Garrison to get the maximum sentence. On Tuesday, they tried to deliver a petition carrying more than 3,000 signatures making the request, but were told to submit it at the hearing through a prosecutor. The judge refused to accept the petition Wednesday, calling it inappropriate. Fox imposed both prison time and four years’ parole and ordered Garrison to pay around $300,000 in restitution to the victims and their families. Source msnbc

Vaseline has recently released some awesome new products, my very favorite of which is their Cocoa Butter Vitalizing Gel Body Oil.

I keep it by the tub, and use it on my wet body before I dry off. It leaves you totally smooth and very nice and moisturized without being greasy (after a very few minutes anyway). We’ve all heard and read the requisite season coat drill a thousand times; key shapes to hunt down and how to wear them etc but what will really make this autumn’s transition to winter smoother than ever is a classic, waist cinching belt. Forget fretting about saving up enough for your must-have winter coat, invest in a show-stopping belt instead which can transform last year’s jacket as well as a generous percentage of last years purchases. In the form of an instant wardrobe updater, belts will play a substantial role in the season’s key looks and literally, defining shapes.

Take skirts. The most up-to-date style comes high waisted with a body-skimming shape woven in gorgeous textured material. However, if you can’t bear to part with your favourite skirt that ticks none of those boxes, there is a way to bring it to the forefront of autumn dressing. Here, a wide, patent belt will do perfectly, streamlining the silhouette and adding a few extra inches of height to the waistband.

Opinions: Fashion Mid-life Crisis?

I’m at a fashion crossroads. You know how in fashion magazines, they tell you that women within certain age groups should adopt trends differently? i.e., In your 20’s you should embrace the latest style craze with open arms; in your 30’s, a head nod or acknowledgement of sorts; and in your 40’s/50’s, an admiration from afar…perhaps a raised eyebrow and subtle smile if appropriate.

In my early-to-mid 20’s, I was a fashion trend sycophant: wild prints, form-fitting dresses, one-shouldered sparkly tops, 5 inch platform wedge heels, and Fendi baguettes were staples in my daily wardrobe. When suiting up, I was fun, flirty, and daring, and I didn’t really care about the consequences. I was like Lindsay Lohan, minus the stint in rehab. I felt young, powerful, and loved the idea of turning heads.

In my mid-to-late 20’s, I found myself toning it down a bit, mainly because I spent my time lounging at home with friends with a bottle of wine, instead of out at the latest N.Y.C. club with random friends-of-friends, bouncing around to J.T.’s latest song with martini in hand. I attribute that partly to my relationship status, no longer single, but in general, I was growing tired of the exhausting ritual of getting ready for a night out. Down with the hour-long primping session and finding the perfect outfit! Down with strapping myself into sky-high stilettos that always left me limping by the end of the night! I felt like I could still look good and have fun minus all of the early 20’s narcissism and fanfare.

Luckily, fashion seemed to have read my mind and there came laid-back, sort of “SoCal glam.” Skinny jeans, cute t-shirts and tanks, ballet flats and oversized bags became staples in my wardrobe and my blistered feet and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Now that I’m teetering on the cusp of being shooed into the “what to wear in your 30’s” bracket, I find myself feeling nostalgic and somewhat scared as I enter this next phase in my fashion life. Even though I haven’t quite done it in a while, am I ready to shelf the possibility of looking like a glittery, attention seeking “celebri-tart” on a night out in the city? Will I be judged or “tsk-tsk’d” for rockin’ a sequin mini shift or bubble dress? Should I be more careful of not over-doing it so that I can stay inside the lines of 30’s fashion reason? Is there really such a fine line between “Wow. You look fabulous!” and “Woah. Aren’t you, like, 30 or something?” I haven’t come up with concrete answers to those questions quite yet since I’m playing it by ear.

But no matter what, my general philosophy has become clear: For as long as I’m still getting “wow’d” and not “woah’d” by the masses, I’m going to keep dressing like I’m 29. Because even if I never muster up the nerve to strut down the street with that sequin shift dress I bought on a whim, no one can deprive me of that euphoric “fashion buzz” that you can only get by sifting through your cluttered, but trend-filled closet and feeling like anything’s possible!

Criticizing the fashion industry for promoting an unhealthy image of beauty is nothing new. How designers are responding to these allegations is however. In 2006, the authorities at Madrid Fashion Week barred models with a body mass index of less than 18 from walking down the runway. In the U.K the British Fashion Council recently established a new rule requiring all models to obtain declarations from doctors proving that their weight is healthy. While this rule won’t be put into practice until next year, some designers are already taking action.

This fashion week in Milan, Prada made a conscious effort to use curvier models and in Paris Karl Lagerfeld rejected three ultra-thin models from his show, saying that they looked unhealthy and unattractive. However, it’s less clear whether his stand against unhealthy models will have an impact outside the industry. The designers who create minuscule sample sizes and the size zero models who wear them are often blamed for promoting unrealistic standards of beauty. But while cultural pressures certainly have an impact on the number of women with eating disorders, the fashion industry is not the only factor.

The causes behind eating disorders are complex, and studies have demonstrated that a person’s upbringing, emotional health, and genetics may have an impact on eating habits. Likewise, ideas about weight within one’s community may also influence behavior. These factors aside, seeing more models of different shapes and sizes could only be positive. In this regard then, the events taking place in Europe is good news for models and non-models alike. Hopefully, the rest of the world will follow suit…

Have A Very Marni Birthday

What better way to celebrate one’s birthday than with a few new Marni pieces? Yes, yesterday I officially reached the end of my wunderkind years. I am twenty four to be exact. And by and large I think I have done a fair bit in my time on this good earth. To celebrate I bought myself (well Phil bought me the pants, thanks baby!) some Marni! I am making a real effort to do more with separates so I feel really good about these purchases. I feel like my Jil Sander pants in black and beige have been great for going to the office everyday (nice change from working out of sublet Brooklyn lofts) but I need more casual pants. And I don’t even own a decent blazer so something a little more mellow like this jacket is the perfect addition. The wrinkled cotton gabardine just feels so right for San Francisco. During the colder months I tend to find that my skin and hair becomes dryer and more fragile. Prepare skin for harsh temperatures by bathing with an oil based wash like Bath & Body Works’ Sugar Scrubs. They’re so good you don’t even need to moisturize afterwards. For midday moisture, slather on a sweet smelling body butters like Vaseline’s Cocoa Butter Body Butter, Carol’s Daughter’s Jamaican Punch Shea Souffle or the Mediterranean Almond, Pistachio & Milk Body Butter by Boots. Not only do they smell yummy, but they prevent “ash attacks.” For night time protection (especially if I’m going out and showing some skin) I LOVE Johnson & Johnson’s Oil Gel in Chamomile. This stuff keeps you silky smooth for days! Lastly, your face and hair will need extra love and care since they are the most exposed parts of your body. Try spending a bit more money here on products that contain herbal and plant extracts known as “Phytos.” Phytokarite Hair Treatment Mask with Shea Butter (for Ultra Dry Hair) is a great deep conditioner for natural or relaxed hair. Also try Artdeco’s Phyto Science Advanced Phyto Cream for your face. If you’re rolling in disposable income may I suggest Crème De La Mer’s products. Notoriously expansive, this product claims to be “the miracle” of all creams. I say send me a sample and let me be the judge!

Use face creams on your hands. Since your hands are always exposed they need as much love as your face. Anti-aging face creams are also great for your hands.

Discontinued Products

Can anyone tell me why it is that when I find a great product, the store that offers it invariably decides to discontinue it? The Bath and Body Works had Pumpkin Body Butter that worked wonders on my ultra dry skin - yes, discontinued! Another favourite is The Body Shop's Grapeseed Body Butter; although it says on their online site that they are temporarily out of stock, I'm afraid that this wonderfully smoothing cream which is the best I've used so far is going to be discontinued also.
So, what to do? First, I've been looking for other formulations that also contain jojoba oil and shea butter as well as the grapeseed oil. There are a couple of possibilities that look interesting only one is in the U.K. and I hate to think what shipping could be for it since it comes in a heavy glass jar.
The other alternative is Ebay, and surprisingly enough I've found quite a few offerings. I got Pumpkin Butter at a reasonable price - not the $3.00 a jar it was selling for on the website when they were getting rid of it all, but a reasonable price with reasonable shipping. If you check Ebay, be sure that the seller has at least a 99% feedback rating (although this can differ depending on how many feedbacks he/she actually has), and that the ad for it says that it has been unopened. If it doesn't state this in the ad, be sure to send an e-mail to the seller to make sure that this is a new, unused product. Likely, it is, since many Ebay sellers will go to stores such as The Bath and Body Works and buy all the products that are being discontinued at rock-bottom prices, then offer them for sale on Ebay to people like me who can't live without them.

Britney Spears actually did appear in court yesterday to personally request overnight visits with her children. She had skipped the morning hearing, but decided it was time to make an appearance when the judge initially refused to grant overnight visits. E! Online reports:

Spears spent an hour answering the judge's questions, before ducking down a back staircase and leaving the premises in her white Mercedes convertible. Gordon apparently had a change of heart after the meet-and-greet with Spears. Earlier Thursday, he dismissed both legal teams without adjusting the visitation terms. He said he wanted to allow attorneys more time to discuss any proposed modifications.

Britney was granted one overnight visit a week, but under the watch of a court-appointed supervisor. Britney was hoping to have her mother serve as a monitor, but the judge wouldn’t allow it. He also didn’t see the children’s current visiting schedule as destructive, but found another source to be problematic – Britney:

"If a person's dealing with challenges, and those challenges, including substance issues and emotional issues...some of the behaviors that accompany those challenges can have a devastating impact," said Gordon, who has yet to get confirmation of Spears' passed drug tests. "It has disintegrated from there because of choices made by your client."

Britney Spears showed up in a court of law and the bailiff didn’t shoot her? What do I pay taxes for? If this judge really wanted to protect those kids, he would’ve put Britney on the witness stand and said, “My bailiff here would like to cross-examine you – with bullets!” Bam! Custody battle solved. Ironically, I proposed this same scenario at Harvard Law and they made me spend a week in a little room with this weird guy. He kept showing me ink blots that looked like Britney Spears vagina and Satan. I can never tell the two apart. That’s healthy, right?

And nobody wore corporate-chic better than Lucy Liu's ferociously foxy Ling Wu; who sported her trouser suits, sharp shirts and spiked stilettos with some serious edge, and a whole heap of attitude.

Lucy Liu had arrived, and when the series lent her an almost instantaneous style queen status, the actress didn't disappoint. With her quirky, freckled Asian looks, amazing hair and perfectly petite figure, it's hardly surprising that Liu can make almost anything look good. She is rarely if ever seen looking anything but sleek and glamorous, developing a trademark look of grooming and sophisticated elegance. She appears to have that rare, invaluable ability to combine old-school movie star glamour with cutting edge trends, and all the top designers can't get enough clothes on that back.

One of her more scene stealing numbers was the red and black one shoulder Versace gown she wore to the 72nd academy awards, which launched the actress on almost every best-dressed-at-the-Oscars list to be seen on. The beautiful fish tailed gown was beaded in a graphic swirl design, and was set off to perfection by red snakeskin sandals, and of course Liu's own sleek, jet-black locks.
But this style jackpot was by no means a one-off for the actress who first gained public attention (from the male public anyway) playing a dangerously sexy dominatrix in the movie "Payback". It's difficult to pinpoint the best-dressed moments of a woman who never seems to be anything but. Take for example her 2005 Milan Fashion Week outfit - simple yet stunning black, knee-length Versace; accessorised modestly with amazing Bulgari earrings and teetering peeptoe black heels. Just one more example of her simplicity-with-style fashion formula that never seems to let her down.

And of course, Liu takes her stylishness across the board, appearing in some of the 'coolest' movies being made. Who could forget her in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill", and she certainly hit the blockbuster mark in "Charlie's Angels" with friends Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. When she made a cameo as herself in the style series of our time "Sex and the City", remember how she wore the then must-have "J'adore Dior" tank top - the storyline based around her reluctance to give up her Hermes birkin…..

Yes, Lucy Liu truly has made it as a Hollywood star - no mean feat among the masses of wannabe-starlets swarming LA. How did she do it? A combination of hard work, natural talent and stunning Asian looks - all beautifully packaged with focussed determination, natural flair and killer style that has and will always set Lucy Liu apart from the pack. Imagine you’re a fashion designer at the apogee of an industry that, whichever way you slice it, is wasteful, sometimes cruel and aimed at planting the seeds of a desire that can never be slaked. Then suppose - crazy thought, this - that you have a conscience. What are you going to do about it?

If you’re Stella McCartney, you attempt mini-miracles: a deal with Gucci, one of the world’s premier leather brands, whereby they get to pump about £15 million into your label and you get to say you won’t work with animal skins. Then you get an itchy feeling about all the chemicals zipping around the average skincare range, so you launch your own organic line. And in an era of dedicated conspicuous consumption, you try to redefine luxury with clothes that don’t drip with bling, fur or obvious status symbols.

It’s easy to be cynical, as many have been, about Stella McCartney. She herself must have occasionally wondered whether being a vet or producing Animal Hospital wouldn’t have been more straightforward. But these days the detractors are fewer. As the bottles of McCartney’s scent, placed on the rows of seats at her show yesterday politely reminded, she is a British designer with an international reach. Having sustained hefty losses in the beginning, she’s on track to head a global business. The famous name didn’t hurt, but no one can say she didn’t put in the spadework. The H&M collaboration two years ago was a sell-out. The adidas partnership continues apace and she recently signed a deal with Bendon, the New Zealand company that produces Elle MacPherson’s lucrative line of underwear.

So that leaves the fashion collection, the flag-waver for her growing band of licences and therefore relevant and yet elitist. McCartney seems acutely aware of this gap: she wants lots of women to wear her designs. But short of personally subbing them, that’s not going to happen.

It’s this conflict that makes McCartney’s shows so interesting to watch, beyond the prettiness of the clothes themselves. And they are very pretty indeed. Next spring’s collection began with a series of floral chiffon dresses and (because this is McCartney and she likes to be a bit street) some jumpsuits, all of it confirming 2008 as the year of the flower. She hadn’t forgotten her tailoring roots, with double-breasted jackets and wide, flowy trousers.

But it was her just-around-the-knee, ivory chiffon dresses, with their ruffles in crumpled parachute silk, dipping, cutaway backs and loosely tied waists that made for some of the most desirable clothes so far.

Out they wafted, to the strains of Paul McCartney’s Blackbird. Ah, the simple life. Squint, and these gorgeous, floaty, kaftan/shift/smock hybrids could almost be something you picked up on holiday for a song. Closer study suggested they’ll be as cheap as a trip on NetJets. Subtle cream beading and quilting marks them out as stealth wealth purchases.

Giambattista Valli doesn’t do stealth wealth, but exquisitely constructed cocoons, with sharply delineated flounces and dramatically puffed sleeves, where every hour of painstaking craft is on show. These are trophy clothes for trophy bodies and ought to seem old-fashioned. But the scale of his strapless pouff dresses with their theatrical bows and pleats makes them modern, almost avant-garde. He would have been a natural to take over from Valentino. But perhaps he’s better off building his own brand.

On the subject of construction, one of McCartney’s clogs deconstructed in front of the audience, the sole detaching from the straps and depositing itself on the catwalk. Not the most effective way to wean the fashion pack off fur, crocodile and other forms of über-luxury. But you gotta love the girl for trying.

Supermodel Gemma Ward a hot act

STRIKING the perfect pout wasn't the only thing on Australian supermodel Gemma Ward's mind as she paraded on the Paris catwalk last week.

The world's No. 1 high fashion stunner is also establishing herself as hot acting property, using her international modelling career to boost her profile for the big screen.

Sydney-based director Elissa Down, who gave the 19-year-old her first taste of acting in 2001 with short film Pink Pyjamas, says Ward oozes X-factor.

Down says when it came to casting a lead actress to star in her directorial feature film debut, The Black Balloon, Ward was top of her wish list.

"When I first saw Gemma all those years ago at just 13, you could tell she was going to make it," Downs said.

"She is a very natural actor and so engaging. Some people wondered about having a model (in The Black Balloon) and now they have seen her work they are like 'oh my god'. There is something personally pleasing about that for me. She is just so good."

The Perth-born performer appears alongside Toni Collette and Jack Thomson as Jackie in the coming-of-age drama, which will hit screens early next year.

Down wrote the part with Ward in mind.

"When we started writing we had Gemma in mind and then bless her cotton socks she went and got famous on us," she said. "But she was still interested."

The Black Balloon is Ward's third film, with her turn as a masked stranger opposite Liv Tyler in suspense thriller The Strangers set for release late next year.

As the world's 10th highest-earning model, Ward took home $3.4 million in the past year but has scaled back catwalk commitments as acting takes priority.

For the Paris fashion shows last week Ward walked only for the top houses such as Celine, Givenchy and Balmain.

At 19, her new womanly curves were also on show this week filling out the forms of a diaphanous gown at Valentino - a stark contrasts to past years when she was known for "doll like" girlie looks.

Remember when Mischa Barton used to look really great? You know, she wore nice clothes, that sort of thing? Well, hallelujah and call me Nancy - because those days have returned!

Mischa was out last night with Demi Moore - among others - at a party thrown by jewellers Van Cleef and Arpels to celebrate the start of New York Fashion Week. And after months, nay years, it seems, of looking Mushy - to paraphrase Perez Hilton - she looked fabulous in a swept-back, bouffant 'do, gorgeous make-up and an adorable red dress. In fact, the overall effect was very Cameron-Diaz-as-a-brunette. Only even better.

And as for her pal Demi - when did she start looking like someone's kid sister? Is it the hair? The tan? The smile? The, erm, 'work' (she's being doing to her body down at the gym, I mean)? Whatever it is, it's great, if slightly unnerving. Is there a picture of her somewhere in an attic in Beverly Hills?

Is there such a thing as a model being too young or too thin?

Just this past week, a fifteen year old girl, Claire Quirk was dumped as the up and coming face of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week for being too young. Ironically her sixteenth birthday coincided with the Melbourne Fashion Week where she was scheduled to saunter the catwalk. The chair of the Melbourne City Council, Cr Fiona Snedden told theage.com, “as a parent, I have a fundamental issue about this. Fifteen is just too young. There needs to be a time when we stop and say, is it wrong to have models this young?”

The British fashion industries panel recommended banning models under the age of sixteen from London fashion week. This report raised many questions such as how prevalent are eating disorders among models and should a minimum body mass index be introduced for London Fashion Week?

In Rome designer Raffaella Curiel barred fifteen models from her show for being too skinny, in order to comply with the fashion code, in wake of the death of a Brazilian model weighing in at 88 pounds with a height of 5-foot-8 inches. The code bans models under the age of sixteen as well as requires each model to present a health certificate. “I was forced to fire 15 models who were too skinny and for the others I still had to tighten the clothes,” reported Corriere della Sera daily. “I absolutely don’t want models who are too skinny,” she told RAI TV. “They are a bad example for young generations.”

Australian fashion council manager Zoe Edquist agrees with these restrictions, “children under the age of 16 – and they are children – are in a very adult industry. It is not an adult industry in the way pornography industry is adult, but it is a grown up environment.” Questions whether young teen aged girls were mature enough to cope with rejection, sexuality and alcohol in a responsible and healthy way were also raised.
Gisele Bundchen, a 26 year old supermodel, has strong beliefs that the fashion industry is not to blame, Gisele told Brazil's Globo: "I never suffered from this problem because I had a very strong family base. The parents are responsible, not fashion. Everybody knows the standard for models is to be thin, but you can't generalise and say that all models are anorexic."

Jenny McWhirter, an underground student at the University of Waterloo and part time model, decided to conduct an online survey to challenge the very common view that models are at an increased risk of developing eating disorders or having unhealthy relationships with food.

McWhirter interviewed 339 models for her study which focuses on self-esteem produced surprising results. It found 93 per cent of participants felt that modelling was a positive influence that enhanced their lives as opposed to a stressful or damaging experience. However a contradiction occurs when looking at the girls body mass index results which found that the majority of models taking part in the study would be considered underweight ( weighing in with a score of 17.4 ). The underweight girls claim that eating habits and exercise programmes do not seem to differ from those of the non-models ( weighing in with the score 22.7 ).

Dr Adrienne Key, clinical director at Priory Hospital eating disorder unit, had reported that almost 40 per cent of models may have eating disorders. A report from the Canadian Paediatric Society confirmed that eating disorders were prevalent among adolescent girls, being the third most common illness in this age group.

Analysing and interpreting the accuracy of Jennifer’s findings have raised additional questions. The undergraduates who participated in her survey may not be sufficient representatives of the entire young adult population, and their relationship with food, as her participants were sourced from a single University, consisting exclusively of undergraduates. The Hawthorne effect is also called into question as it undermines the internal validity of the survey i.e. subjects could respond in a certain way as they know they are being observed and receiving additional attention. McWhirter admits to the possibility that both models and non-models that have chosen not to participate in the study may have eating disorders. The reliability to the degree to which the scale yields consistent results are also questionable as this experiment has not been repeated by other researchers. In addition some may question Jennifer’s objectivity given that she is part of the same industry she is researching.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen’s show was a tribute to the late fashion editor Isabella Blow, the woman responsible for catapulting McQueen from struggling designer to household name. Isabella met McQueen in the early nineties when purchasing his entire graduate collection for £5,000. Ironically enough McQueen made a fortune from his career in fashion, unlike Blow, the editor responsible for faming the McQueen brand. The show entitled La Dame Bleue was inspired by "extreme glamour – pure Isabella territory".

McQueen pulled out all the stops; his garments held a contemporary form while remaining classic McQueen with the upward curving-shouldered silhouettes and hourglass figures in an east meets west infusion. Futuristic Jetson’s styled thigh skimming dresses in nude pallets were paired with red oversized cinches. Skirt suits were adorned in subdued snake skins and paired with tiny clutches. Layers of Chiffon were strung together forming light transparent dresses as plastic cummerbunds gave structure to the flowing garbs. Double breasted striped jackets accompanied short shorts and body suits. Golden embellishments adorned a star shaped top and an angular embroidered skirt. A fencing motif ran through headgear, and satin-silk pink and black pagoda-shouldered dresses. The kimono was a strong influence as the motif embraced wide cummerbunds and curved shoulder pads. Evening gowns were flamboyant; a pink lavender kimono inspired gown remained the main attraction along with a jet black peignoir featuring an exaggerated train. A golden textured gown with ruffled peaked shoulders closed the show in a truly glamorous manner.

Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld’s show opened exposing all garments denim; an array of trends shook the catwalk like a blizzard of overlapping motifs. Fifties, stripes and stars, transparent organza garments and satin silk oversized shirts perfect for sleepwear were reminiscent of previous Lagerfeld shows. Curled shoulders and androgynous garbs, the collection encompassed every motif. The show was entitled Nuits d'Été, an idea of a few of the themes displayed at Chanel.

Denim swim suits opened the show; one tiny brief was paired with a sky blue shirt, and a matchbox ankle-purse, no doubt inspired by young Hollywood’s love of SCRAM. Polka dotted retro frocks and Americana stars and stripes followed farm-style playsuits, dungarees and sixties bows. The tattered one piece and ribbed shirt-dress remained among the theme of the free world.

Classic Chanel began to peak through in glimpses of tailored mid-length suits and cropped resort jackets. A sporty line featured Jenna Ward in a pair of spandex tennis shorts and a multicoloured jumper, with racket in hand. A string of pattered vests, pullovers and dresses were adorned in a design of vibrant colours.

An array of nautical loops adorned subdued jet black garments, filled with metallic threads and paired with laced stiletto boots. Translucent organza skirts accompanied star shaped blousons with cinched bows. Evening dresses followed an eclectic array of trends. Translucent gowns textured glittered frocks and stars embraced Lagerfeld’s third show. Cocktail dresses in a variety of hues and shades offered a classic silhouette to an amalgam of motifs.

Paris Fashion Week: Day 6

“"I just started with three thoughts: blazers, sweatshirts, and a vaguely preppy idea," said Stefano Pilati, "and then it went into thinking about goddesses, [and] stars." Pilati opened the collection with his contemporary take on “post-modernist minimalism”. The garments featured strong masculine tailoring as dress suits and single breasted jackets embodied strong lines and dark shades of sailor blues and polar whites. A key shape for spring includes oversized star formed jackets cinched at the waist, matched with shortened tapered trousers exposing a hint of flesh.

Dress suits remained conservative in neutral shades of arctic white, charcoal grey and sandy beige. Exaggerated tops and free flowing A-line skirts were cinched by feminine belts creating the desired star shaped silhouette, a recurrent theme amongst Pilati’s creative approach to tailoring. The star motif ran throughout the entire collection, conservative demure ensembles made way for a metallic “glam-rock” star cut top which took centre stage. The uppermost part of the garment was created by linking reflective plastic breast plates in a chain like manner, paired with a stiff turquoise below the knee skirt.

The tailored blazer was cropped sleeveless creating a masculine vest, single sleeved sweatshirts and oversized jackets made way for star printed conservative dresses. Another star cut garment in the form of a pencil line skirt was created from reflective plastic breast plates.

Russian model Natalia Vodianova appeared in the Yves St Laurent show after making headlines for participating in Paris Fashion week just three weeks after giving birth to her third child. The supermodel wore a classic jet black suit with blazer and waistcoat as part of Pilati’s evening wear. Other garments included satin-silk single sleeved gowns in opulent hues of berry mauve and shades of sandy beige and egg shell yellow.

Stella McCartney

“It’s a modern take on delicacy, but keeping the British sense of humour and a little bit of edge,” McCartney revealed before the show. The designer known for her vegetarianism and her environmental conscious lines embraced a contemporary collection of hippie chic. The models were wearing loose flowing frocks, floral printed playsuits and wooden healed clogs to a backdrop of organic vegetation. Keeping in line with the theme of conservation the green wall forming the backdrop is set to be donated to a low in-come housing district in Boulogne. Despite the clogs falling to pieces on the catwalk the models remained elegant in layered egg shell chiffon and silk-cotton lightweight fabrics.

McCartney’s use of floral was far from shy, but worked beautifully in natural tones of see breeze blues and dusty beige. The collection kicked off with free flowing frocks and thigh skimming safari inspired jackets. Blue floral patterns encompassed oversized shirt dresses and play suits. Floral prints made way for sheer blue cinched dresses and oversized tuxedo styled shirt tops and tiny shorts, perfect for sleep wear. White flowing gowns and retro bathing suits with sea life prints reflected McCartney’s natural motif. Golden beige dresses and suits followed themes of colour blocking, only contrasted by crochet textures and satin silk fabrics. White fairy dresses were strung together using organza and tulle, as the layered and translucent frocks closed the show.

London fashion week brought several highlights including an unexpected performance by Prince. The American pop singer performed a surprise performance during the Mathew Williams showing. Prince, who had snuck into a front row seat, wearing a jet black suit and dark glasses in an attempt to remain incognito, broke into song as his dancers, The Twinz, danced on the catwalk in "Purple Rain" thigh skimmers cinched with silver belts, from the new Williamson spring/summer 2008 collection. Prince began singing from his seat before joining the two dancers for his performance on the catwalk.

Fashion Fringe

Fashion Fringe, an organisation aiming at ‘reviving and invigorating’ the UK's wealth of design talent, had an all too impressive judging panel including Tom Ford, Natalie Massenet and Colin McDowell. Design label Aminaka Wilmont received the prestigious trophy for their futuristic collection.

Antoni And Alison

Nicole Kidman made her appearance at London Fashion week in a film by Antoni Burakowski and Alison Roberts to mark the 20th Anniversary of their label, Antoni and Alison. The 10 min movie featured Kidman modelling their entire spring collection.

Stella McCartney for Addidas

Stella McCartney brought London Fashion Week to a close on Thursday with the first catwalk show of her sportswear collection, Stella McCartney for Addidas. Models were playing tennis, jogging, golfing or just basking in the lights of the west London fitness centre. The centre was transformed into a golfing wonderland. Her designs were suitable for every sporty occasion. Tennis dresses were fun and sporty; tops were tight and casual and swimsuits were cutaway. Stella’s second collection will show in two weeks at Paris Fashion Week.

The Truth Behind Platinum Blondes!

People in general seem to associate personality with hair colour. Dr Tony Cassidy and Georgina Harris, of the University of Coventry, asked 120 people consisting of 60 men and 60 women to look at photographs of a woman sporting four different coloured wigs of platinum blonde, neutral blonde, red and brunette. The group was asked to rate each model for intelligence, shyness, aggressiveness, popularity and temperament.

The brown haired model was rated as more shy while the natural looking blonde was thought to be more popular, and the platinum blonde was rated least intelligent (especially by men). Dr Cassidy recently told the BBC, “It seems that the stereotype of dumb blondes did exist, but only in terms of platinum blondes. It is important to understand that we do make judgements based on stereotypes, and if we make judgements that have important implications for the people we are judging, we need to be aware of this situation.”

The mystery still remains why the “dumb” label was only attributed to the platinum blonde and not the natural blonde, but Dr Cassidy does feel that the media is largely responsible for this platinum blonde stereotype. Stereotypes date back to thousands of years, archaeologists have found that the redheads of the Celtic lands were considered fierce and passionate, while blondes were held in higher esteem and thought of as pure and virtues. Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday Mr President” in her seductive and sexy voice remains a moment frozen in history that the new generation of platinum blondes aspire to. Pamela Anderson, Sophie Dahl and even the late Anna Nicole Smith have to a certain degree aspired to gaining such iconic status with the help of their blonde locks.

So why would seemly intelligent people buy into such a ridiculous stereotype? It all comes down to our fast paced life style and need to make quick judgements in a very short period of time. According to David W Johnson, from the University of Minnesota and author of Reaching Out “The world is simply too complicated to attend to every detail and therefore the perceiver relies on stereotypes to simplify social perception. By reducing the complexity of the social environment stereotypes make it more manageable.” As well as “help us make sense of who we are and what is happening” in the world.

I decided to find out the word on the street, and who better to kick off with then the don of the designer shoe?

“Mr. Blahnik says you should go as high as you can!” A dedicated member of his team enthused, “The standard height of a pair of high-heeled Manolo’s is usually 10cm. But next season we are taking our clients to new heights of 12cm. Shoes should be an investment, as we do spend all day on our feet. Why not add some class too!”

“It really depends where I am going. During the week I tend to wear flats because I can’t drive with heels. But on a night out, high heels are a must,” says a young brunette taking a break from her PR assistant role.

“I feel more confident in heels, so I tend to wear them to the office,” was an executive assistant’s response.

I managed to intercept a young woman hobbling along on some chunky heels for her opinion: “That’s really funny that you ask. I usually wear flats, but decided on these today. It was going well, but somehow the shoe has snapped in half! I’m not sure if this is a sign or not!”

“I actually prefer kitten heels. I have bunions so comfort is a big factor. But, I do have to start practising walking on heels though – my wedding day is soon and my shoes are really high!” was the response from a lady on her way back to the office.

“I prefer heels because it gives me some height and better posture. I feel really short and dumpy without them,” says a petite woman on her way to lunch.

For once, I am happy to remain undecided. Which essentially means no limitations and feet fit for any occasion!

Shopping Adventures: Fashion Recycled

In an effort to manage my raging shopping addiction (and its drastic affect on my pocket), I decided to attempt a new challenge: acquiring fun additions to my wardrobe at no extra cost.

Boutiques specialising in the selling of vintage and second hand couture have helped dispel any qualms about the purchasing of reclaimed clothing. In fact, these exclusive stores enjoy patronage from stylish celebrities like Kate Moss, Scarlett Johansen and Sienna Miller.

Even charity shops have cottoned on to consumer demand. Oxfam recently opened a store on the exclusive New Bond Street in Mayfair. A visit from Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham to their branch in Notting Hill also helped raise their profile. Another success story is that of TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development). They sell pre-owned clothing and feature a line, TRAIDremade, which recreates discarded garments into new fashionable items. Their end of season ‘£3 per item’ sales are a firm favourite.

But what I was really excited about was visiting the string of retro exchange stores in Notting Hill Gate. They offer cash or in-store credit for your goods. Having heard that they were extremely selective about what they bartered - I had some relentless sorting to do. My wardrobe was laden with items of clothing that I had either forgotten about – or simply no longer wore. I separated them into various piles: old and forlorn, wearable but not fashionable, outdated designer, unique but no longer my style and redundant accessories.

After bundling them as neatly as possible into separate bags, I headed off on what I hoped would be a very satisfying, inexpensive shopping spree. I dumped the ‘old and forlorn’ into a TRAID textile recycling container, donated the ‘wearable but not fashionable’ to the nearest charity shop and then hauled the rest all the way up Portobello to Retro Woman.

I loved the fact that they have a range of stores (featuring designer, retro and unique finds, men’s and interior) all within walking distance of each other. The window displays are extraordinary and set the tone for rail upon rail of amazing finds. Glass cabinets line the walls, filled with designer shoes and bags.

“Twenty-five pounds cash or fifty pounds in-store credit for these.” She muttered, fingering the more considerable pile. I was so relieved to be offered some sort of compensation that I didn’t even bother trying to haggle. I opted for the in-store credit and floated upstairs clutching the Monopoly-money like vouchers to my chest. There was no immediate obligation to spend the credit, but I was determined to leave with something spectacular. Their limitless stock and range of prices (from £1 to well above my £50) made finding that special something seem effortless. Besides, part of the joy of shopping in these types of stores is that you can spend hours upon hours discovering unique and beautiful garments.

I eventually settled on the following:
1) Pretty summer dress, any girl’s wardrobe staple for the current season!
2) ‘Miracle’ original designer brooch (with jewellers mark on the back)
3) ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ inspired violet dress: perfect for a friends wedding later that month

I was so impressed with the success of my shopping adventure that I stopped a few people on Portobello to get their view on recycling fashion: “I think it’s great!” says a long-legged blonde beauty. “Being a student I am always strapped for cash, but I can still buy something edgy and unique at a fair price.” Another fashionista on her way to grab a coffee said: “At first, I wasn’t convinced. Then I saw these D & G pumps at a stall on Portobello for a £1. I just spent twenty quid on having them resoled and heeled and now I have a smashing pair of designer shoes!” “I have used those stores (Retro) before. I got rid of some unwanted clothes and managed to get £20 cash to spend on a coffee date,” says a dishy fella weaving his way through the crowd toward Notting Hill tube. Recycling has never been this fun or rewarding. I will definitely be returning to barter me beautiful!

Are you a fashion victim faking it to make it?

With such high-profile design houses and celebrities making news as they defend the authenticity of their designs, it begs the question: where are you buying?

‘Fast-fashion’ is the latest phenomenon taking the retail industry by storm. There is increasing consumer demand for delivering trendy fashionable items at bargain prices – often within weeks of catwalk showings. Bargain stores and supermarket chains are slowly edging out their high-street competitors with hot garments priced to go.

Primark has emerged as the McDonalds of the retail industry. Never before have so many proudly flaunted their brown paper bags or openly boasted about the bargains to be had whilst shopping for groceries at Tesco’s or Asda’s.

Fashion has become practically disposable. Nowadays you can own an entire summer wardrobe for fifty quid. The fact that they will probably fall apart after a couple of months is inconsequential – because by then you will have acquired an entirely new range of clothes.

Stylish but way too pricey?

Even celebrities are doing the unthinkable – mixing high street with designer couture. Asos.com (as seen on stars) is a perfect representation of this. Originally they were set up as a way for the average joe and jane to access the trend-setting clobber that celebs wear at budget-fitting prices. They have become such a phenomenal success that the very stars whose style the site wear their garments. Now, designer handbags are flogged on the same web pages as their fashion faddish chic.

The era of the fast-fashion junkie has emerged. £2 vest tops are snatched up much like a cheeseburger and fries.

The knock-off industry has also exploded in recent years. Advanced technology means that more accurate copies are flooding the market. You can easily buy fakes from flea markets or online.

Luxury fashion brands are priced so that only a select few can afford them. The beauty of these products lies not only in the way they are crafted, but also in the allure of the catwalk showings and the prestige that goes with the brand. Undeniably, they can also be seen as symbols of status. The thrill of slinging the latest Chloé Elvire leather tote over your shoulder certainly earns admiring glances from passers-by. So do we purchase these items because we aspire to be like the celebrities that grace the pages of our glossy magazines? Or is it more a question of style?

Perhaps the most violated brand when it comes to rip-off handbags is Louis Vuitton. Somehow seeing bags brandished with LW logos, is incredibly sad.Is buying a fake a desperate bid by some to gain access to a world that would otherwise elude them?The startling truth is that as consumers in a first world country, it’s difficult to recognize the consequences of either fast-fashion or blatant knock-offs.

Becoming more fashion conscious has opened my eyes to the underworld of the fake industry. The cartels who operate factories that manufacture knock-offs are engaged in criminalist activities. In the absence of any regulation in this lawless industry – they exploit their labourers, often children, who are obliged to work back to back 10 hour shifts. Often there is no human interaction in these sweat shops, just the sound of the machines. Gangs and the mafia are increasingly turning to this trade as it has become more profitable then narcotics.

Try the high street for design inspired items at a fraction of the cost.

Do you really want to condone these practices? There are more creative solutions to this shopping dilemma. If it is designer that you crave, try second hand stores for lucky finds. Although fast-fashion also have consequences (the low prices of goods are an indication of poorly paid labourers), at least this industry is subject to some regulation. Stores like Zara and H&M were founded on the premise that they would deliver items to those fashion enthusiasts that are squeezed out of the couture price bracket. Primark, Peacocks and supermarket lines caught on to demand and helped make fashion even more accessible to the masses. Instead of being copycats, these stores model their items on what’s new on the catwalks, what appears in magazines, in the movies or from inspirational trips abroad.

Being a fashionista need no longer take its toll on your pocket. Select a designer item you love (handbags are timeless, shoes equally so) and make an investment. If you choose wisely, these items will complement your outfits for years to come. For short-term fashion relief, hit the high street.

Have fun with fashion. You can afford to.

No Doubt, Gwen sues Forever21

Gwen Stefani is sure doing a lot of hollering to claim not to be a Holla Back Girl.

The multi-talented artist, singer, songwriter and now fashion designer feels she has every right to do so. She is suing the retail company Forever21, Inc., for copyright infringement. In papers filed in Los Angeles Federal Court, representatives for Stefani’s Harajuku Lovers fashion line allege that the retail chain, Forever21, Inc., stole their original design where Harajuku Lover’s Heart/Box motif was copied, slightly modified, then advertised, promoted and sold as their own. Theres is no doubt that Forever21’s heart box logo has striking similarities to that of Stefanis,’ but in a world of love and art all can be forgiven, or not? Dejavu it seems in the artistic world, where artists need to be inspired by their creative muses, but these muses aren’t too happy and they are making those copycats pay a hefty price for it.

Forever21 is an affordable cheap and chic fashion retailer catering to teenagers and young women alike who cannot afford or would rather pay low prices for fashionable designed clothing. Stefani’s L.A.M.B./Harajuku Lovers line known for their unique styles and comtemporary pieces. The aftermath?

Picture the scene. Your alarm fails to rouse you from your cosy slumber and you wake up with five minutes to spare. In the throes of frantic teeth brushing and manic hair slicking, the chances you will throw together an outfit worthy of Moss calibre is unlikely.

In fact, you will probably grab a reliable T-shirt and jeans combo. There couldn’t be a simpler ingredient in an outfit. The trusty T-shirt. This garment may come attached with a dreary and decidedly no-brainer stigma but this season has given T-shirts an upgrade.

It all began with Henry Holland’s nu-rave fashion mottos. The fluorescent Tees emblazoned with witty fashion lingo were the talking point of fashion week and launched the young designer to a new level of fashion status. Even Gareth Pugh and Giles Deacon got in on a slice of the designer’s trademark by wearing their own Holland T-shirts at fashion week in September. It was this T-shirt triumph that lead to the 23 year old designer’s “House of Holland” range launched in Harvey Nichols and Barneys.

In a world where the daily what-to-wear debate is increasingly traumatic, the simplicity of a T-shirt is welcomed with open arms into our wardrobes. Sadly, this is one garment that doesn’t tick the versatility box. Its simplicity detracts from its versatility in that it will never be acceptable to wear a T-shirt to work or any other formal event. No matter how high your heels or how glitzy your jewels; a T-shirt will always denote a nonchalant exterior. On the bright side, this is great news for those who favour LA effortless cool. Hollywood starlets have devoted much time and effort to mastering the art of facile dressing and it is rare a day goes by without one of them being papped in a statement Tee.

Nowadays, T-shirts accommodate all tastes. There have been many replicas of Henry Holland’s luminous, block capital Tees and rock and roll designs can be found in any good vintage shop at little expense. In fact, for an undoubtedly unique design, vintage shops are the perfect hideaway for treasured T-shirts complete with the desirable worn-in look that the high street simply can’t compete with. Having said that, I highly recommend Urban Outfitters for their T-shirt selection. Nowhere else would you find a Carebear T-shirt next to Batman’s T-shirt. Urban Outfitters yields licence to transform you into any superhero you wish to be.

My favourite T-shirt was actually bought for me by one of my best friends. Ever the astute fashionista, she spotted someone wearing the unique T-shirt and pounced on them demanding they reveal where they purchased their trendy top. My friend scampered straight to the shop and bought us both one because I would apparently “absolutely love it”. As always, she was right. It declares “I heart Stella, Tom, Marc, John” and I take great delight in divulging to any confused stranger that it actually states my love for Stella McCartney, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and John Galliano and does not represent a bold bisexual statement on my behalf.

Here lies the beauty of T-shirts themselves, you can say anything you want with them. There’s no mistaking one of my closest friends when he struts out in a purple Henry Holland “Come Back To Mine Calvin Klein” T-shirt and such are the virtues of designer Tees. Customise a bargain Tee with bedazzling gems, scribble on your own graffiti or feminise with satin bows and gleaming trinkets. Whatever you think, with T-shirts you can literally get it off your chest.

Cheap Chic….Cost Effective or Calculated Con?

The journey from catwalk to high street. It is fashion’s oxygen, the very essence it thrives on. But just how far will you go to achieve a true fashionista look? As far as £500?

Those of you who just shook your heads and wrinkled your noses in disgust will be inevitably overjoyed at the outbreak of “cheap chic”. The eruption of ultra-bargainous retailers such as Primark and supermarket fashion found in Asda and Tesco marks a sharp veer from catwalk costs to cheap chic.

I have admittedly been seduced many times into purchasing something just because it’s cheap; get it home and wonder why. It irritates me that with the collaborated cost of my erratic purchases, I could be walking around in those ridiculously expensive shoes I’ve been longing after for months. Adding insult to injury, it’s undeniable the shoes will yield a longer lifetime than all my haphazard purchases put together. When did it become acceptable to treat clothes as disposable? I estimate it was the point at which Primark’s popularity skyrocketed.

The outbreak of supermarket fashion has also fuelled this concept, aligning shoes parallel with spinach and diminishing the gap between what we perceive as mundane grocery shopping and “retail therapy”. It blurs the line between what we need and what we want and increases the accessibility of clothes to an extent where we are faced with no rational explanation to refuse purchase. Add into this toxic cocktail of designer replicas and cheap prices the boost of celebrity endorsement (namely Colleen for George at Asda and Melanie Sykes for Matalan) and it is little wonder we are becoming weak in the face of giant budget retailers.

Who can forget the Chloe inspired dress that literally flew off the shelves from Tesco in 2005? Chloe’s flowing, pale green chiffon that would have set you back £1,400 was being imitated in Tesco for £45 but flogged on Ebay for £100 due to its must-have calibre. I think this is perfectly acceptable behaviour for high street retailers to take inspiration from the catwalk, after all, this is fashion’s perpetual conveyor belt. However, it is interesting to observe that in debates such as these, two fashion tribes emerge. First there are those who won’t settle for anything less than the real deal. They believe that the substantial price tag reflects the quality, cut and lifespan of the garment and don’t merely buy with the sole motivation of the shiny designer label. If this is the case then simply a replica of the item’s style and design won’t satisfy. On the other hand, there are those who crave the catwalk’s appearance and desire to parade themselves with a veneer of designer clothing. It is this mind set that was the focal point for Tesco and their infamous green dress. So what if the dress lasted for the number of days equivalent to the price tag, it enabled a tiny slice of catwalk fantasy to hang in the reality of an everyday wardrobe. In the battle of these two fashion tribes, ultimately, those who will surrender a considerable amount of money for an exquisite piece of clothing and those who choose not to, it appears that the cheap chic is certainly outdoing the lure of designer attire. You only have to peek round the doors of Primark to fathom this.

There is no doubt in my mind that all these budget stores have a positive effect on the fashion world today. Without them, it would simply not be possible to indulge in each season’s fickle trends as they come and go. They nurture our freedom to experiment in wild styles that we would normally never touch for fear of looking stupid and if, as predicted, we do, we unquestionably bin them. Discard the evidence because we can afford to. It makes sense for fashion led fads to stick to the cheaper shops, you know you wont be seen dead in your fluorescent leggings this time next year.

At the end of the day fashion is meant to be fun and if the giveaway prices enable us to be more experimental with style then that can’t be detrimental. It only becomes destructive when we begin to discard our style identity in a cloud of mass market, one-sold-every-minute smocks and find every other person wandering around in the same “must have” summer dress. Cheap prices should be celebrated but individuality should be celebrated more.

Consumers views – Ethical Fashions

Since the Sunday Times hit Sir Phillip Green, owner of the Arcadia group, with allegations of unethical practises of factory workers, a recent survey revealed that 45 per cent of consumers are sceptical of ethical guarantees made by stores on the high street. This UK based survey continues to reveal that 59 per cent of consumers feel ethics within the fashion industry are important, and an over whelming majority of 70 per cent felt the exclusion of sweat shops and child labour during manufacturing is crucial.

Sir Phillip Green released his own statement amidst theses allegations. “Having investigated, I provided yesterday to the newspaper a copy of Arcadia's most recently completed independent audit report undertaken a few months ago together with a further audit report from another [unnamed] major retailer dated July 2007. Both these reports found the factories generally compliant with relevant Codes of Practice,"

Safia Minney, founder of ethical fashion label, People Tree, understands consumers’ mistrust of such brands. “There is scepticism about ethical fashion on the high street because there is often a lack of transparency, particularly with organic cotton where there is no legislation.” She continues, “the reason why People Tree has seen such high growth is that labels aren’t enough. People need to be sure of the companies’ ethos so they are searching out the pioneers in this area,” reported New Consumer.

Consumers under the age of 25 admit to being won over by cheap fashion, without giving any thought to fair labour conditions and child labour, 6 out of 10 ten consumers fall into this category. A grim aspect, but never the less 4 out of 10 consumers do have fashion a fashion concionce, and according to Safia Minney. “The four in ten under 25 year olds that DO care are building a flourishing ethical and fair trade fashion industry ” for us all.

Supermodels Tyra banks, Iman, Alek Wek and most recently Naomi Campbell have accused high fashion magazines, Vogue in particular, of "sidelining black beauty". Naomi Campbell has made headlines with her decision to open her own modelling agency in Kenya in an attempt to amends the situation of what she feels is racism and discrimination by fashion publications.

Alek Wek, recently revealed in her self entitled biography, Alek, just hot off the printing press, her views on a coffee ad for the Italian brand Lavazza. During a photo shoot the black beauty posed nude in a “gigantic white espresso cup bigger than a car . . . My skin was to be the espresso. I can’t help but compare them to all the images of black people that have been used in marketing over the decades. There was the big-lipped jungle-dweller on the blackamoor ceramic mugs sold in the ’40s; the golliwog badges given away with jam; Little Black Sambo, who decorated the walls of an American restaurant chain in the 1960s; and Uncle Ben, whose apparently benign image still sells rice.” Lavazza CEO Ennio Ranaboldo told Page Six: “A great artist photographer, Albert Watson. A great model, Alek Wek. A great calendar. That’s all there’s to say.”

Some may feel Naomi’s complaints are petty and unfounded, complaining about the lack of covers she appears on, when the average person is faced with bills, mortgages, debts – real problems. Obviously her argument goes above and beyond knit picking over magazine covers, but it’s hard to sympathise with a ‘struggling model’ that is in no way struggling to make a living.

Anya James, a black model from London and a featured contestant on the reality show, Make me a Supermodel, said racism is ripe in the fashion industry. "From my experience as a black model, I have to work 10 times as hard. For example, at castings, I make sure I look 110 per cent and that I'm on my best form. You hardly ever see a black model in the public eye, but no-one seems to be speaking up about this imbalance," reported The Independent.

Certain publications have reported on their selection process, stating that an average fashion magazine has one black cover per year, which is in no way racist, but rather balances out their target demographic. The results of the 2001 UK Census revealed in its ethnic composition that the prominent ethic group is 92.2 per cent white, while 2 per cent of the British population is black, 1.2 percent is mixed race and the remaining ethnic groups such as Asians, Indians and Pakistani’s make up the remaining 5.8 per cent. Bearing theses statistics in mind one black cover per year more than covers its demographic.

Have fashion photographers hit rock bottom?

Many are mimicking tabloids and drawing inspiration from gossip rags for shoots appearing on the glossy pages of reputedly classy publications like Vogue, Marie Claire and W.

Steven Meisel, one of fashion’s most successful photographers in the world, is renowned for his tongue-in-chic work with leading design houses, and Italian and US Vogue. Most of his concepts result in either cult status followings or controversial backlashes.

His images draw from a combination of cultural trends, innovative artistry and his uncanny wit. Most of his features look as if it belongs between the hard covers of an expensive arty book (not surprising then that he was the photographer for Madonna’s SEX).

Makeover Madness (Italian Vogue, July 2005), featuring Linda Evangelista, is an example of the shock story-telling technique Meisel employs. It’s a critique of the trend at the time: plastic surgery and our preoccupation with perfection or the ‘All American’ beauty.

State of Emergency (Italian Vogue, September 2006) is infamous for the consequent feminist uproar and Italian police allegations of its pornographic nature. It has vivid images of women in violent situations: being arrested by riot police or interrogated by government officials.

His latest offering, Off the Wagon in Italian Vogue has been met with a few raised brows to say the least.

Fashion has always flirted with addiction: the emergence of ‘fast-fashion’ and references to ‘must-haves’ smack of a dependence of some kind. Heroin chic was all the rage not too long ago and we could be witnessing a revival of some sort.

Pete Doherty has fronted the campaign of Gio-Goi despite a drug riddled past and present. The usually bright-eyed and bushy tailed Gwyneth Paltrow adorns the cover of W looking the lighter shade of OD. The lifeless images of the feature article are startling to say the least – an embodiment of the pallor of headline hags Li-lo and Britney Spears.

Many have argued that fashion glamorises the use of narcotics. Miesel seems to have hit that very nerve by recreating scenes of the unravelling lives of stars seeking rehabilitation. Once again, he has become the centre of a fiery debate about media’s responsibility to society. Noble as the cause may be, have we not forgotten something?

Fashionistas the world over turn pages to find out about fashion: what’s in, who’s out wearing it and where to get it. So it’s slightly confusing that Vogue would lend its brand to projects that do not cater to the needs of the very people who splurge on their magazines. After all, most of the luxury fashion brands whose garments grace the pages of this controversial spread can barely be seen. What happened to being the clotheshorse of exclusive designs?

Aside from this very obvious blunder, what’s even more disappointing is that they seem to be selling out. We have all smarted at the spiky comment that fashion is fickle. Now we are left with no recourse as these images are quite obviously drawn from the real life tragedies that are young celebs. Has the obsession with fame and misfortune infiltrated every aspect of our world? So much so that the very glossies that declare themselves a cut above the cheap gossip rags, are eating their words?

Boundaries are set to blur as we forge ahead in the making of fashion history. I just hope we don’t lose sight of what we’re about in the process.

A Colourful Season

Wearing black is like smothering yourself in a woolly comfort blanket. There is a reason why the average wardrobe is 20% black and that’s because it’s resourceful, effortless and of course, famously slimming.

Inevitably, as we stand on the cusp of a new season, declarations of the “new black” are coming thick and fast. Last year, grey was celebrated and as summer approached mustard and white became appropriately popular. Now, the subdued tones of autumn/winter, usually grey, beige and black that stand to reflect the dismal weather are being replaced with a refreshing splash of colour.

Throughout the summer, fluorescent tones were heralded as the hottest colours and acid brights scattered their lurid glare across the high street but as autumn approaches, this dazzling fusion of colour has evolved into richer tones. The catwalk saw head-to-toe outfits of colour, no timid displays of colour by accessorising. I would suggest a striking cobalt blue as the easiest colour to wear if you want a fast track to fashion and it can be easily accessorised with your trusty black staple pieces.

Purple is the most on trend at the moment, a welcome alternative to black in the evening but a brighter shade of purple is perfect for daywear.

Purple and blue will be the most favoured as the season approaches but this colourful trend extends to any bold shade of the spectrum. There is little room for pastels, it’s all about warm, vivid colour.

Ultimately, black will never expire it’s fashion credibility and will never fail to save you on those occasions when there simply is nothing else to wear but until those moments of desperation transpire, treat your wardrobe to a little enlightenment.

From Jungle girl to Super Model

Bindi Irwin, daughter of “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, took to the cat walk in Vegas to promote her kids clothing range. At the tender age of nine the New York Times has dubbed little Bindi the Shirley Temple of wild life conservation. She is known by most as an experienced conservationist, animal rights activist, successful television personality and the newest child star to jump on the eco – fashion bandwagon.

Bindi appeared at the world’s largest fashion trade show, python in hand and all smiles, to show case her fashion in a bid to motivate kids to protect and conserve the environment. I’m sure getting a slice of the $34 billion a year children's clothing market wouldn’t hurt either. Her new show, Bindi The Jungle Girl has already made waves among the American market, and her fashion line is predicted to do just that.

The Bindi International fashion line, is not designed by the jungle girl herself, but created by Queensland-based designers Melanie Finger and Palmina Martin. Her clothing ranges from new born to ten years, and that means little Bindi only has one more year to wear her ethical line before she gets too old.

The spring/summer 2008 line consists of 130 pieces as well as carrying four themes, “Green is the new black which promotes koala conservation, Baby Warrior, which offers fun animal prints for babies, Punk Warrior which enables kids to protect animals and the environment; [and lastly] Industrial Cowgirl and Cowboy, which shows the beauty of creation enhanced by technology,” reported The Daily.

Bindi also has her own tee shirt line, where she helped to create the slogans, "Green is the new black", "Extinct stinks" and "Save me, plant a tree" reported The Age. Profits from her tee shirt sales are set to go to environmental causes.

Get the Gray Look

The key to making other trends work this autumn/winter is to build on basics. Bold and bulky accessories are best matched with more subtle colours. Chunky knits, opaque tights and cute knee highs are winter wonderful. Tailored sophistication debuted on the runways - good news for those of us stuck in the city all week. Glamour continues to inspire with beautiful silhouettes gracing the runway in all things gray.

If you’re thinking boring – think again. Choose shades ranging from rich charcoal to ashen gray. Innovate with metallic pewter or silver and you’ll be pulling off two trends at a time. Not sure where to begin? A few basic items will give you a head start.

Invest in a classic. The beauty of the gray trend is that it’s a colour that won’t really date. Pencil skirts, tailored jackets and elegant trousers are items that will last. To achieve a playfully chic look, you can then add some faddish fashion.

Statement colours are all the rage: purple, scarlet and canary yellow amongst the favourites. Make it work both in the office and on the weekend. Slip a violet blouse under a tailored skirt suit for boardroom class. Pair with soft denims for urban casual. A cheap way to cheer up a gray day is to mix up with a pair of opaque tights in a brilliant hue. If you’re feeling less adventurous, stick with gray tones and keep those pins toasty in knee high woollen socks or silky stockings. A pair of red heels will add a splash of colour without taking too much of a risk. Cover up with a silvery trench or even better: a coat with dazzling trim.

If you can only afford to splurge on one item, make it the chunky knit. For understated style wrap your LBD in one with a waist-cinching belt. They work wonders with a pair of wide-legged trousers too. If you’re after a sleeker silhouette, try a jersey dress. Choose between one of the newer snug fits or a contemporary layered design.

You will be astounded by how simple accessories keep you in fashion and on budget. For a sophisticated finish to an all black ensemble (we all have plenty of those), drape a lead coloured woollen scarf over your shoulders. A clutch purse in a daring canary yellow will add some sass to your newly acquired gray staples. Hats are so hip this season - don’t leave home without one. If you haven’t already bought a statement neckpiece – do it now. Bangles have been replaced with jewelled cuffs in metal or plastic.

Now that you’ve got all you need, it’s a good idea to create your very own lookbook. Take snapshots of a few outfits, incorporating newly purchased treats with what you already have. Put them up on your wall or in your closet. You won’t ever have to wonder what to wear next!

Fabulous fedoras, brightly coloured berets and woolly wonders – your crowning glory.

Fashion has never been this functional. I love the utilitarian trend that warmed the autumn/winter runways. Hats for every occasion mixed up in a way that defies the tight constraints of yesteryear.

Headgear has evolved. Gone are the days when we only donned them for a day at the races. Now you can integrate the upcoming season’s staple into your daily dress.

Brighten up a dowdy day in the office by wearing a bold coloured beret. For avant-garde style match casual oversized woolly beanies with any elegant ensemble. The best way to finish off the tailored look is to opt for a structured sculpted cap.

Glamour returns and the best way to fake it is with fur. Soften up with a fedora or draw inspiration from our feathered friends for a more haute look.

One of the simplest ways to update your wardrobe for the new season is to purchase an item hot on trend. I was keen to get a head start, so spent the afternoon on the prowl.

Net-a-porter.com had knitted options: a beret from Mulberry at £39 and two chunky beanies from Chloe and Burberry at under £100. The muted tones on offer were not really what I had in mind, so I continued to browse online.

Yoox.com never disappoints and was loaded with pages and pages of options. There were several designer creations priced for any pocket. I loved the lilac Diesel crochet creation at £14 and would definitely splurge on the sculpted fur hat from Nina Ricci.

Oli.co.uk is fast becoming another favourite for stylish solutions. The wide-brimmed 70’s inspired hat I sourced was a mere £25 and the Ted Baker trilby was a treat at £40!

Asos.com was a bit disappointing this time round. They had one or two Mischa inspired crochet caps, but that was all really.

I also came across Beatrice Baker’s website – the couture milliner where you could have hats made to order, or bring in an old one for a new lease on life. Sylvia Fletcher’s range for Lock & Co. Hatters is another one to watch.

Eager to try on a few, I headed for Oxford Circus. Topshop was fashion forward as always. Fedoras had made it to their window display already. I was torn between classic black or gorgeous green. At £25 you could have both if you like!

Other high-street stores were not quite on target – the sales assistant at Mango’s said she had seen a woollen one amongst the new stock, as yet unpacked. Miss Selfridge had nothing to show for themselves and Zara was a let down. Dorothy Perkins had a red trilby worth a mention and H&M had an interesting hat set on a mannequin (couldn’t find it on the shop floor though).

House of Frasier offers a lovely range of oversized woollen caps aside from their range of occasion hats. I was also surprised to find some edgy designs amongst the granny hats at Debenham’s - perfect for a friends wedding I was going to in a couple of weeks.

You can always rely on Primark for fantastic bargains. Even I was startled to see their black sculpted cap (very similar to the Nina Ricci one I loved, minus the fur) for an unbelievable £4. That and a beret in every colour (or maybe just the cobalt blue one) had me laughing all the way to the cashiers.

So cheer up fashionistas! Our summer may be rained out but at least we have the perfect excuse to get our hats on!

The largest street party in Europe!

August Bank Holiday is synonymous with the festivities of The Notting Hill Carnival. What began as a local festival for the West Indian community has since evolved into an explosion of colour, music and sumptuous cuisine. This weekend the sun came out to play – and for fashionistas in the know it was all about keeping cool and comfy.

Amongst the favourites this year were cute frocks, short shorts and denim divine! Loads of revellers wore statement colours in stand-out fashion, perfectly in tune with the festivities. Jewellery was kept minimal but what lacked in trinkets was compensated by oversized handbags. There were a few brave stars tottering around on heels and an abundance of people with open-toe sandals. A definite no-no considering the crowds of people pushing past (ouch!) and the sticky-toe syndrome (yuk!). Ballet pumps were the clever choice, whilst trendy sneakers made several appearances too.

One of the major attractions at Carnival is the parade. Dancers line the streets in fabulous costumes: vibrant colours that accentuate their every move. Fabulous gear adorned their heads: long feathers and sparkling gems reaching for the sky. Many of these are made by professional costume designers, with participants from all around the world including South America. The streets were alive with shades of purple, blue, orange, green and gold. This is truly a spectacle that every fashion enthusiast should experience.

Once I’d feasted my eyes on the dazzling display in Ladbroke Grove, I headed for one of the hundred’s of stalls selling Caribbean delicacies like jerk chicken, dumplings and salt fish.

The music was fantastic too. There were over a dozen sound systems set up along the parameters. An eclectic mix of soulful house, dancehall, reggae, drum and bass and R & B ensured that everyone had a beat to fit their groove. The place to be was definitely Sancho Panza. Fabulous!

It soon became clear: those with street savvy came out tops. Take the lead from the likes of Sienna and Kate and mix high street with designer. Sensible shoes and gorgeous sunnies are key. And don’t be afraid to stamp your look with your own unique twist.

I loved every moment of it! Not only do you get to experience the spirit of Carnival – but you also get to check out what’s hot in street fashion. Never before have I encountered such an assortment of style.

After all, what really counts is how the public interprets what’s set loose on the runway…

This week a leading academic journal ‘Scientific American Mind’ confirmed what we’ve know for ages. ‘You are what you wear’, psychologists have confirmed that the way you dress influences your climb up the corporate ladder or into the top seat and that’s not just in the fashion and media spectrum but across the board. This revelation is rather timely as once again power dressing is back. This autumn there will be no skirting around the issue as pencil skirts are backed with tailored crisp shirts and large neck tie bow blouses. And what power dressing ensemble would be complete without subtle shades and hues of success?

The 80’s was the era that coined the term ‘power dressing’ and featured the quintessential ‘working girl’ in the form of Melanie Griffith. Petite and large frames alike adopted power suits and shoulder pads, with strong makeup and voluminous teased hair to finish off the look. Eyes were dark and dramatic with the help of many layers of eyeliner and bold eye shadow in bright shades of blue, green, gold and purple. For lips, the color of choice: furious reds and neon pinks. And what drama-loving era would be complete without, mica, a metallic powder popular to shimmy up eyes and any other body part that needed extra shimmer. Icons of the time included Melanie Griffith, Madonna, Kim Basinger and Molly Ringwald. No doubt it’s hard to be a woman of importance without make up, however there is no need to revert back to the high drama of 80’s make up to get the look.

Sheer Highlights are radiance in a bottle, dollop it on for an instant lift. Try Lancome's Fluide Illuminator Sheer Radiance Highlighter shade 01 or for darker skins opt for Highlighter shade 02 Hale (£14.00) or another firm favorite, Benefit's High Beam (offers a soft pink sheen $24.00) and Moon Beam (a golden glow $24.00) for instant sheer.

Powder pretty: powders are tricky and can easily create an unwanted caked look as well as magnifying lines around the face. Most women have combination skin with the greasiest part of the face being the nose and forehead dubbed the T - Zone, while the cheeks and chin stay dry. Therefore opt to minimize the shine with only powdering the nose and forehead. Other options open to power groomers are some old fashion blotting paper to absorb excess oil. Try Classic Chanel Papier Matifiant ($31.00) a firm favorite as the container looks sleek and chic but surprisingly is able to contain 150 sheets on one pad in a mirrored compact for ease of use. An asset in the battle against the T-Zone. Philosophy's Oil Control Blotting Papers offers a cheaper alternative and promises not to disturb make up ($12.45).

Eyes are back in the lime light, with all eyes going for black liquid eyeliner. A quick run of liquid black over the eye can create a fashion forward fall eye. Try Jane Iredale Liquid Eye Liner ($20.00). This liner is so easy to apply that even if you've never used a liquid liner before you won't have any trouble lining your eyes. Like mascara it's all about the precision brush, Iredale offers a long handle for easy application with the tip offering the option of thin or thick line depending on how you use it, added benefit includes no sensitizing or drying chemicals. Double beauty comes in the form of Elain Colorist Eyes - Duet Eye, ($17) which contains an eye pencil and liquid eyeliner. Application is fabulous thanks to the fine tipped brush that gives precision ease application. This duo is the ultimate weapon when attempting the smoking eye. The pencil and brush can of course also be used separately and this one is my personal 'must have'. As for the color only one shade creates classic chic and needs no introductions number Zero - color black.

Trick or Treatment? Make- up School

Eight glasses of champagne are poured. Eight faces are scrubbed clean of make-up and eight cosmetic bags are opened, so all the powders and paints spill out.

‘Ok everyone, take your usual foundation and let me see how you apply it,’ instructs make – up pro Daniel Sandler, who’s been creating faces for magazine shoots and catwalk shows for over 20 years. With his own cosmetic range and a studio at urban retreat in Harrods, Sandler’s now launched a service where he, or one of his personally trained make up artists, will visit your home to teach a master class.

Myself and my seven make up aficionado friends do as we’re told, giggling. Truth is, as we start to dip and dad, I feel self conscious, exposed. It’s strange, having an expert police something that you usually do, almost without thinking, alone every day. That private moment when you put on your public face; when you dive into your trusty box of tricks, with its unique mix of recent shiny purchases and old faithfuls with scuffed logos, dodgy hinges and powder worn into running tracks. As these items are scrutinized, it feels like having the head designers of Agent Provocateur go through your underwear drawer, knowing they’ll eventually hold aloft an aged pair of baggy knickers.

‘Your foundation is too grey’,’ Sandler says to my friend Anna, who has the sunniest of natural tones. But he approves of my ex – colleague Sue’s Yves Saint Laurent Teint Mat Parfait Foundation (her favorite tinted moisturizer because, she reckons, it doesn’t collect in fine lines). Then he tries to cajole my best friend and minimalist make up wearer, Jacqui, to try more than just a light veil of powder. By now, I’m convinced I look too rosy. ‘No, your complexion is good, but your concealer is too light and chalky,’ he answers. I don’t let on I only bought it yesterday.

After offering individual advice, Sandler takes centre stage to talk base, explaining that fingers are fine to apply foundation, but wielding a brush can give a cleaner finish. And with that, he demonstrates on my neighbor, Julie, applying one of his mineral sheer tints. A base brush isn’t something any of us use, but in a flash, her already amazing skin looks like it’s been airbrushed.

‘Only use foundation where you need it. If you slap it on everywhere, you drain the life out of your skin,’ he warns. At this point, I think I actually have too much life in my skin, having become all hot and bothered at the prospect of playing host (would I be dragging my friends to the cosmetics equivalent of a Tupperware party?), but Sandler is the perfect compere, managing to be reassuring without sounding patronizing.

And so concealer. According to Sandler, the right one will minimize blemishes and shadows, but it shouldn’t look like you have something pale sitting on your skin. Immediately, I see my face with fresh eyes – I look like a panda in reverse. Now I can see that my passion for extreme concealing is flawed.

‘You should buy concealer from the dame range as your foundation, because the shades work together,’ we’re told. ‘If you’re stuck with a concealer that’s new [that would be me], mix it with a smidgen of your foundation and when it runs out, make the switch.’

We learn umpteen other tips. For example, if you apply a bit of concealer to the top of your lip line, your mouth instantly looks fuller. And if you bland it on eyelids, your lashes look blacker.

But the fun really starts when it comes to powder – mainly because Sue overloads the powder puff and performs a mushroom – cloud manoeuvre. Sandler is unable to keep a straight face, but makes the serious point that we can clearly see how too much powder can knock the glow out of a beautifully applied base. He also shows us how to contour with blush and bronzer – a feat all of us shy away from.

Vicky, who long ago abandoned blush because she couldn’t get it right, has a mini epiphany: ‘I didn’t think I had cheekbones. But I have!’ I notice a change in the way she looks at herself in the mirror – it’s more confident ‘ I can’t believe the color he’s suggested actually works,’ she adds, ‘I’d never have picked it in a million years.’ But that’s one of the helpful things about the Sandler road show: using the shades you’d never normally flirt with, let alone try in a shop.

Ann –Louise is the most sussed with her make – up and, in contrast to Jacqui’s barely – there approach, adores a really – there result, but it’s interesting to see how Sandler adapts the same techniques to each of them.

And even though Jacqui remains unconvinced that foundation is for her, watching friends being made up can be just as instructive as being worked on yourself.

Clearly, some of us have the right products, but we are using them in the wrong way.

Others, Anna included, own shades that are off –beam. As she’s getting married in June, she’s using the session to assemble her capsule collection and within an hour, she’s turned into a ruthless editor. ‘If it’s wrong, it’s gone,’ she cries, throwing her make –up, clattering, into the bin.

‘You’re all so critical of yourselves,’ notes Daniel.

‘You concentrate on things you hate, but people don’t zoom in 2in from you face. So when you’re making-up, stand back and get an objective view.’

Other nuggets of advice: bend your mascara wand into a 45 degree angle; add more to the outer corners of your lashes for more flattering drama; invest in a pair of Shu Uemura eyelash curlers and ditch brown mascara because it’s ‘utterly pointless’.

Perhaps the most valuable thing I learnt is that my brows, which I’ve always considered my best feature, are too thin.

Extolling the virtues of Julie’s more natural brows, he pencils mine thicker. I look in the mirror, expecting to loathe the change. I reluctantly admit, it takes five years off my face. I also rediscover the fun of experimenting. Daniel worked on the Jenny Peckham spring/summer show in Milan and we try out the look – which includes gold eyeshadow, swept up to the brows, and I decide maybe, just maybe, I’ll go on a gilt trip this spring.

Conjuring up the days when you forged a sick note to escape the rigour of PE, plimsolls formed the epitome of your games kit.

The squeaky-clean canvas and geeky shaped round toe obliterated any individuality and succeeded in cloning the whole class as uniform impeccably manages to do. But now, plimsolls are rearing their (round-toed) head all over the high street so it’s time to indulge in a little geek chic.

Versace

“This [collection] is for a working woman,” Versace said before the show. “Everything is sensual, but sleek and simple.” Versace has undergone a re-birth, inspiring glamour through moderation. The first model emerged in a “blonde” understated silk jersey dress, paired with a tuxedo style blazer. A hint of safari chic peaked through a white and beige ensemble of short shorts and a cropped sleeved top, as did retro chic plastic coats in maple syrup yellow, while candy pinks and festive honey tints contrasted the minimalist shades of day wear.

The introduction of a royal blue blouson dress made the subtle shift from day to night. Golds, greys and olive shades saw not a single shimmer or sparkle, the new Versace attributes simplicity as the new iridescent tone. The leading Versace garments included the silk jersey dress, khaki inspired coats and tuxedo style blazers. “The blazer is back!” Donotella announced.

Only at Versace could a minimalist motif cause such a stir of excitement as the label brought Milan Fashion Week to a close. Next week will undoubtedly be dubbed the most anticipated collection to date as Francesca, Versace’s niece; will show her debut collection, under the Francesca V label, at Paris Fashion Week. A year after her completion in design studies, the twenty five years old ambitious designer will reveal her design talents. After the labels struggles in early 2000 the iconic brand has once again become an admiral contender.

Dolce and Gabanna

The controversial duo has paid “homage to contemporary art.” Their collection opened like a fresh canvas, featuring polar white 50’s inspired dresses and minimalist shades of beige and beach sand yellow. "There are no bows, no flowers, no lace. It's very linear, so rather than romantic, we call it sensual," said Dolce.

By the “third course” of models the garments became a visual display of living art. High waist skirts, rah – rah midway minis and dresses were ‘splattered’ with paint. Their contemporary inspiration came from observing the art within the Gramercy Park Hotel. They witnessed a collection of baroque divans and contemporary artwork which became their muse. Like the baroque movement suggests the garments of Dolce and Gabanna reflected the dramatic, tense, exuberant, and grandeur style of design.

Fantasy ballgowns brought the show to a close, strong crimsons, jet blacks and lavender-sunshine hues reflected the intensity of the dresses. Bigger than life the creations were constructed with layers of tule, and hand painted. One ball gown in particular reflected the intensity of a lavender and yellow hibiscus basking in the sun. The collection embraced all the popular trends including fantasy silhouettes, transparancy, minimilast garments and a touch of retro chic.

Fendi

The soft hues of a romantic Fendi collection accompanied an array of soft leather over sized clutches. The label celebrated ten years of the Baguette bag. An accessory worthy of far more than bag-of-the-minute status, Venturini Fendi described the bag as an ageless essential saying, "I think the Baguette deserves a longer life than an 'It' bag." The bag was exhibited in various shades, tones and sizes as it accompanied most ensembles.

Karl Lagerfeld embraced his love of "controlled graphics" with circular prints and patterns. Coats, boleros and cropped sleeved jackets at first emerged linear and symmetrical with little sign of curvature, but soon embraced the circular beginnings of collars, cuffs and prints. Lagerfeld admits his inspiration arrived in the form of a rainbow, desiring a softer line but essentially bored with flowers. Like many other brands the Fendi label has under gone a dramatic transformation from the iconic structured silhouette, responsible for building the brand, to a bonanza of fluidity.

A touch of a retro revival was evident in his use of angular cinches and sixties rainbow prints. His evening collection added a touch of drama to a somewhat illusionist, but demure collection. Organza and tulle remained the foundation for his dramatic display of evening wear, as gowns were adorned with glistening PVC inspired trimmings.

The over-sized clutch is a fab buy at £25 simply chic and bang on trend, with the knee high boots a good staple item for any fashionista and priced at a very affordable £90. They are practical and trendy with a round toe and thick heel and are set to look effortlessly fab. with black tights and chunky knits.

The only problem is the mob of frenzied shoppers that are set to descent upon Topshop with sharpened elbows at the ready.
